Helping you serve
children in foster care.
About FCC.
We are a diverse, interfaith network of churches and faith communities united in our dedication to assisting some of the most vulnerable members of our society - children in foster care. Our passion drives us to demonstrate love for our neighbors through practical actions that address the needs of foster children and families across Michigan.
Our goals.
Our primary goal is to serve as a connecting catalyst - inspiring and educating communities of all faiths to participate in at least one project or program dedicated to supporting foster children in Michigan.
-
We believe that within every congregation, there are numerous caring and compassionate individuals. We also believe that if they are made aware of the needs, they will readily engage and get involved.
-
We host gatherings where representatives from congregations, community organizations, and service agencies can listen to motivational speakers and discover ways in which we can all work together in collaboration.
-
We aim to alleviate the hardship faced by Michigan's children in foster care by urging congregations to collaborate with a social service agency on a specific project or need.
-
We are enthusiastic about encouraging and inspiring faith communities to issue invitations for individuals to consider becoming licensed foster/adoptive parents, mentors, and respite care providers, ensuring availability when needed.
Our founder.
Rev. Dr. Kathryn (Kate) Thoreson, DMin., founded the Faith Communities Coalition (FCC) in 2010 and has built it to be what it is today. She is actively involved and continues to provide oversight and leadership to the organization.
In addition to her role with FCC, Rev. Kate is also a Parish Associate at Everybody’s Church (First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, MI) where she oversees the Foster/Adoptive Families Partnerships. She is married to Tom Thoresen and together they have served as respite foster parents and have three adult children and two grandkids.
Our coordinator.
Adam has served as a pastor in the Detroit area for 14 years. Early in that time he became aware of the great need for faith communities to serve children and families that are impacted by the child welfare system. He and his wife Cara soon became foster parents, adopted 2 children, and began seeking opportunities for their church to get involved. This quickly led him to connect with Reverend Kate and Adam has been involved in the FCC since 2018. He is very passionate about serving vulnerable children and families and has made it his full time work since 2022.
Adam and Cara have 4 children and a dog named Winston. They are avid sports fans and love their local Detroit teams and The University of Michigan. They can often be found exploring the city to find the best food that it has to offer.
